Medical Assistant Training Program

Norton Healthcare’s training program for medical assistants prepares individuals with little to no medical background to deliver safe, patient-centered care in ambulatory care settings. This is a paid training program that is 40 hours per week and will last approximately eight weeks. Successful completion of the program will result in full-time employment as a medical assistant at Norton Healthcare.

The program will provide education on topics including:

  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Medical terminology
  • Medication math
  • Pharmacology
  • Clinical skills

Applications for the next cohort are open through Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2023, with the new cohort beginning Tuesday, Jan. 16.

A Typical Day for a Medical Assistant at Norton Healthcare

Medical assistants perform administrative and clinical duties under the direct supervision of a medical provider (physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner) in the medical office setting.

Examples of administrative duties:

  • Greeting patients
  • Scheduling appointments
  • Answering phones
  • Clerical/computer work
  • Prior authorizations
  • Disability/Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) paperwork
  • Faxing
  • Billing and coding

Examples of clinical duties:

  • Taking patients to rooms
  • Obtaining vital signs
  • Assisting with medical procedures
  • Performing phlebotomy
  • Obtaining lab specimens
  • Calculating and administering medications/vaccinations
  • Maintaining patients’ electronic medical records (EMR)
  • Adhering to safety and infection guidelines
