Norton Audubon Hospital Podiatric Residency Program

The Norton Audubon Hospital Podiatric Residency Program is a three-year podiatric medicine and surgery program with the added credential in reconstructive rearfoot/ankle surgery (PMSR/RRA) approved by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME). Established in 1998, the residency program was the first of its kind in the state and is consistently recognized as one of the leading residency programs in the nation. This training program meets all requirements for certification in foot surgery and reconstructive rearfoot/ankle surgery by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery, and podiatric orthopedics and primary podiatric medicine by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine

Under the directorship of Keith Myrick, DPM, the Norton Audubon Hospital Podiatric Residency Program offers residents a structured and diversified educational experience. It is a resource-based, competency-driven and assessment-validated program that consists of three years of postgraduate training in inpatient and outpatient medical and surgical management. The program provides training resources that facilitate the resident’s sequential and progressive achievements of specific competencies pertaining to CPME requirements.

A faculty of podiatric and nonpodiatric physicians leads the program. Residents have the opportunity to hone their medical and surgical skills in a professional environment. Residency faculty includes a number of physicians certified by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine and the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery.

Resident Rotations

The Norton Healthcare system consists of four adult-service hospitals and the state’s only full-service, free-standing children’s hospital. Residents in the program rotate throughout the system, including the following areas:

Application Information

The three-year program currently accepts two residents each year, for a total of six residents.

The Norton Audubon Hospital Podiatric Residency Program is a member of the following organizations:

Application Requirements

• Cumulative minimum GPA of 3.2 or higher
• Externship/clerkship as a third- or fourth-year student
• Graduate of an approved college of podiatric medicine
• Sit for the Kentucky licensure exam (part 3 boards are required for a Kentucky license)

The committee functions under the direction of the director for podiatric medical education to:

• Assist in the selection of externs and residents
• Develop rules and regulations pertaining to residents
• Develop policies for due process for residents
• Help implement and fulfill the program’s comprehensive goals, which are resource-based, competency-driven and assessment-validated

Externship Program

The Podiatric Externship is sponsored by Norton Audubon Hospital.  Breakfast and lunch will be provided.  Externs will need transportation for traveling to private offices and other affiliate hospitals.

Goals, Objectives and Responsibilities

Our goal is to provide surgical and nonsurgical activities in a structured environment that will help strengthen podiatric medical students’ knowledge of podiatric medicine and surgery. We also provide an externship manual to assist in training. Each extern is expected to remain integrally involved during the externship. Externs will rotate with a variety of affiliated podiatric and orthopedic physicians in surgery and in private offices. Externs are responsible for assisting with pre-, peri- and postoperative management of patients. Externs also will attend all didactic events. They are required to lead a PowerPoint presentation for journal club and participate in case discussions.

Externship Application Process

• Externs must complete the required Universal Externship/Clerkship application forms provided by the graduate education placement office of the applicant’s college.
• Externs must maintain a cumulative minimum GPA of 3.2 or higher.
