The Gail Klein Garlove Lectureship Fund

This fund supports a special free lectureship series for cancer research established by the family of Gail Klein Garlove.

The Gail Klein Garlove Lectureship is designed to reach all physicians, health care providers and members of the public interested in the latest advancements in cancer treatment and research. Gail Klein Garlove was born Oct. 28, 1939. She died of cancer on July 14, 1994. During her lifetime of dedicated service to the community, Mrs. Garlove worked as an assistant librarian at the Louisville Collegiate School. She also volunteered at Kentucky Country Day School, the Louisville Free Public Library’s “Talking Book” program and the Mormon Home for Retirees.

The Gail Klein Garlove Lectureship Series is sponsored in her honor by Mrs. Garlove’s three children — Matt Lee Garlove Jr., Robin Garlove Fine and Lee Klein Garlove. Proceeds from the lectureship benefit the Norton Healthcare Foundation and Norton Cancer Institute.

Your gift will ensure that the lectureship continues as an invaluable resource for the community and caregivers treating cancer.

The Oncology Education and Prevention Fund

The Oncology Education and Prevention Fund provides educational assistance for the benefit of adult-service hospital-based oncology programs at Norton Healthcare.

Established in 1996 by Gouverneur H. “Bo” Nixon and family, this fund initially provided educational assistance for oncology staff at Norton Hospital in downtown Louisville. The goal was to provide funding for the continuing education and certification of registered nurses to become oncology certified. To date, the program has provided support for the certification of more than 120 nurses now practicing at Norton Cancer Institute.

Since its inception, the fund has grown to offer a range of services to oncology patients and caregivers.

Your gift to the Oncology Education and Prevention Fund will help address the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of patients and their families throughout treatment, and providing continuing education for oncology professionals throughout Norton Cancer Institute. The fund supports services to patients, the community and Norton Healthcare staff, including:

  • Community cancer screenings (breast, prostate, skin, lung and cervical cancers)
  • Continuing education and certification opportunities for Norton Cancer Institute professionals, including the annual Nixon Lectureship.
  • Wigs and turbans for patients experiencing hair loss due to cancer treatment
  • One-on-one education with oncology-certified nurses
  • Educational classes on topics from yoga and stress management to recovering from cancer-related surgery
  • Community education on cancer prevention opportunities at health fairs

The Oncology Spirit Fund

The Oncology Spirit Fund provides resources to benefit the nursing staff of the oncology department through activities that support positive staff morale.

Providing medical care and emotional comfort to oncology patients and their families is a special gift of caregivers at Norton Cancer Institute. To keep energy high and maintain a positive spirit among staff, Governeur H. “Bo” Nixon and family established the Oncology Spirit Fund as a tribute to the nurses and staff who cared for the late Dorothy P. “Dotsie” Nixon during cancer treatment at Norton Hospital.

Your contribution to the Oncology Spirit Fund serves as an expression of appreciation for the dedicated care provided by Norton Healthcare’s oncology staff.

The fund supports activities that promote positive morale and offer opportunities for stress relief and team-building. The fund may be used for rewards and recognitions, relaxation activities, educational programs and environmental enhancement. Past spirit boosters have included holiday parties and gifts, nursing books, staff lunches, gift certificates and expert talks on oncology-related subjects. In turn, oncology staff members approach patients with a more positive, fresh outlook as they continue providing the quality health care the community has come to expect from Norton Cancer Institute.

The Nixon Lectureship Series Fund

The death of a loved one to ovarian cancer nearly 20 years ago has sparked a Louisville family’s quest to defeat what’s often called “the silent killer.” Over two decades, Gouverneur H. “Bo” Nixon and his family have touched nearly all aspects of cancer care at Norton Healthcare through funding and involvement in education, prevention, and treatment.

The family established this lectureship in memory of Bo’s late wife, Dorothy P. “Dotsie” Nixon. The lecture seeks to raise awareness around the need for cutting-edge gynecologic cancer treatments and the latest in palliative care techniques.

Your gift will ensure that the lectureship continues as an invaluable resource for the community and caregivers of patients battling cancer.
