Rooming In

The concept of rooming in, when your baby stays in the same room with you, is designed to involve families in the baby’s care during the first few days after birth. Norton Healthcare encourages rooming in as part of our family-centered approach.

Rooming in allows you and your baby to be cared for by the same nurse in the same room. Studies show that keeping mom and baby together promotes bonding and better prepares them both for going home.

Rooming In Helps Get Families Ready to Go Home

  • Leads to better quality sleep for mom and baby
  • Boosts confidence in caring for baby
  • Helps you learn baby’s cues (hungry, tired, distressed)
  • Encourages bonding by including other family members
  • Provides a supportive environment for breastfeeding
  • Encourages infant care questions from parents and family
  • Reduces the likelihood of mom experiencing “baby blues”

It’s important for new parents to learn how to rest when baby sleeps. Rooming in helps this rhythm happen naturally.

Rooming in also is ideal because newborns eat frequently and find comfort and security in being close to their parents. Keeping baby with you helps you learn how to feed and care for your newborn while our staff is close by to assist.

Whatever your wishes are during this exciting time, it’s our goal to provide you with the best possible care while preparing you to care for your baby at home.
