Endometriosis is a disorder of the lining of the uterus, called the endometrium. It can be very painful and cause infertility. It occurs when the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus onto the ovaries, fallopian tubes and other abdominal organs.

Sometimes endometriosis is mistaken for other health conditions that cause pelvic pain.

Causes for Endometriosis

Medical researchers are not sure what causes endometriosis, but they have some theories:

• Estrogen appears to promote the growth of endometriosis.
• Endometriosis usually is found in the pelvis and abdomen, but can be found in other parts of the body, even surgical scars.
• Endometriosis tends to run in families.

Common Symptoms of Endometriosis

• Very painful menstrual cramps
• Chronic pain in the lower back and pelvis
• Pain during or after sex
• Painful bowel movements or painful urination, especially during menstrual periods
• Diarrhea, constipation, bloating or nausea, especially during menstruation
