Hysterectomy to Treat Early Stage Gynecological Cancer

Treatment options depend on the specific type and stage of cancer. Women with early stage gynecologic cancer often undergo a hysterectomy — surgical removal of the uterus. Sometimes the surgeon also will remove the ovaries, fallopian tubes and/or some lymph nodes during the procedure.

There are different types of hysterectomy procedures, depending on your medical history and health, as well as the extent of cancer growth.

Hysterectomy can be performed through the vagina or abdomen. If the uterus is large or there is internal scarring from prior surgery or other conditions, abdominal hysterectomy usually is performed.

Norton Women’s Care is proud to offer laparoscopic hysterectomy, a minimally invasive procedure that requires significantly smaller incisions. For many patients, that means less pain and scarring, a shorter hospital stay and faster return to daily activities.
