Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

Should I get another vaccination booster, and do they protect against the latest coronavirus strains?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends everyone 6 months and older get an updated vaccine to protect against potentially serious COVID-19 complications. This is especially important for older adults and people with weakened immune systems, who are at highest risk for severe illness. While the updated vaccinations aren’t an exact match for every variant, the CDC says the updated vaccines should work against current variants because of the similar genetic code and should help ensure you have only mild symptoms.

Can I mix and match my booster shot?

Yes, if you are eligible for a vaccine booster, you can choose which one to get. The vaccines are from Pfizer and Moderna.

Should I get a COVID-19 vaccine if I’m pregnant?

Yes, the CDC says vaccines before or while you are pregnant help protect from potentially serious diseases that can make both mom and baby very sick. Learn more from Norton Women’s Care providers about vaccinations for people who are trying to conceive and those who are currently pregnant.

Can I get vaccines online instead of from the pharmacy or doctor’s office?

There are currently no legitimate COVID-19 vaccines produced by any manufacturer that are available online for individuals to purchase. Beware of any offers that do not come from an authorized source, meaning anyone other than a health care provider or official government organization.

Are symptoms for COVID-19 still the same?

Symptoms of COVID-19 include cough, fever or chills, shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle or body aches, new loss of taste or smell, and headaches. Variants can come with slightly different symptoms such as runny nose, dry cough and sneezing.

Where can I get a COVID-19 test?

You can get a COVID-19 diagnostic test at locations across the Louisville area: at Norton Healthcare Express Services, Norton Community Medical Associates primary care offices, Norton Immediate Care Centers and Norton Prompt Care clinics.

I tested positive for COVID-19. How long will I be contagious?

If you have COVID-19, it’s best to isolate yourself at home except for medical appointments. Make sure to restrict activities outside your home, such as going to work and school, visiting family and friends, and visiting public spaces such as grocery stores, churches and retail locations. The one exception to going out in public is when seeking medical care. While quarantining at home, stay away from others who are sharing your home and avoid sharing household items. See these CDC guidelines for additional information, including how long you can expect to be contagious.

Generally, most people feel better by six months, but we also have patients who are eight, 10 and 12 months out and are still experiencing symptoms. People who are still experiencing symptoms after one year are usually those who have had pre-existing conditions.

Am I at risk for long COVID-19?

Although anyone at any age can get long COVID-19, you may be at higher risk if you’ve had a severe COVID-19 illness, such as one requiring hospitalization or intensive care. Chronic diseases, such as diabetes, experienced before or during a COVID-19 illness, also increases your risk.

How can I boost my immune system?

Follow these tips for taking care of yourself if you experience long COVID-19.

  • Rest: If you’ve experienced long COVID-19, you may have difficulty falling asleep. Adequate sleep is important as it supports immune function, brain function and mood stabilization, and it decreases your risk for obesity. COVID-19 insomnia is listed as a sleep disorder affecting more than half of those who have had COVID-19. If you’re having trouble falling or staying asleep, try to:
    • Maintain a consistent sleep schedule.
    • Create a relaxing bedtime routine by listening to soothing music or practicing relaxation exercises.
    • Limit screen exposure to phones, tablets, computers and TVs.
    • Limit naps.
    • Manage your stress and anxiety.
  • Diet: Food is fuel and medicine for your body. The Mediterranean diet has been shown to improve health outcomes.
  • Exercise: If you’re new to exercise or are still experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, consult with your primary care provider before you resume an exercise program. Set reasonable goals. For instance, you may start gradually with only five minutes of exercise and increase your duration and intensity as your body adjusts. Walking, yoga, tai chi and swimming are great exercises for your overall wellness. Strive to make exercise a part of your daily habit. Recovering from COVID-19 is long and slow for some people. That’s why it’s important to adjust your expectations and activities depending on how you feel. Patients who may experience heart palpitations should discuss their condition with their primary care provider.
