The specialists with Norton Healthcare gastroenterology services provide comprehensive care for the inflammatory bowel diseases Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
Home to seven board-certified and fellowship-trained gastroenterologists, the Norton Healthcare gastroenterology team has been caring for patients in Louisville and Southern Indiana for more than 30 years.
Crohn’s disease can affect different parts of the digestive tract and most commonly is found in the last part of the small intestine and the colon. Crohn’s disease causes inflammation that can be painful and debilitating. Complications can be life-threatening, and treatments have shown success in putting the disease into remission.
Our specialists are highly experienced at evaluating unexplained intestinal bleeding and Crohn’s disease using small bowel capsule endoscopy.
During a small bowel capsule endoscopy, the patient swallows a small, pill-shaped camera. Pictures from the camera are transmitted to a recorder worn by the patient.
Our doctors are very experienced in the interpretation of small bowel capsule endoscopy, having performed more than 1,000 procedures in recent years.
Ulcerative colitis typically is confined to the inner lining of the colon and rectum. Ulcerative colitis is a risk factor for colon cancer. Treatments for ulcerative colitis range from medication to surgery to remove the colon and rectum.
Infusions of the drug Remicade have been helpful for ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. We provide these infusions in the outpatient unit at Norton Women’s & Children’s Hospital.
