Diabetes is a group of diseases affecting how your body regulates blood sugar (glucose) levels. Glucose is an important source of energy for your body, and a hormone known as insulin helps control the levels of glucose in your blood.
Diabetes can lead to too much sugar in the blood, which can lead to more serious health issues. If you have been diagnosed with prediabetes, your blood sugar levels are higher than average, but not high enough to be diabetes. You can reverse prediabetes, so it’s important to do annual screenings with your primary care provider.
Here are the main types of diabetes:
Prediabetes – In prediabetes, your blood sugar is higher than normal, but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. This puts you at higher risk to develop diabetes.
Type I diabetes – In Type I diabetes, your body does not make any insulin. This is managed by insulin injections or an insulin pump, as well as a healthy diet and exercise. It is usually diagnosed in children, teens and young adults but can be diagnosed at any age.
Type 2 diabetes – In Type 2 diabetes, your body does not use insulin efficiently. Some people can control their blood sugar with healthy eating and exercise, while others have to take oral medicines and/or insulin injections. It develops over several years and is usually diagnosed in adults, but is becoming more common in children, teens and young adults.
Gestational diabetes – This is diabetes that develops during pregnancy in people who have never had diabetes. It usually goes away after the baby is delivered, but it does put the person at higher risk to develop diabetes later in life.
Our diabetes care team offers you a personalized treatment plan that may include:
Your primary care provider can help diagnose and provide treatment for diabetes and prediabetes. However, if you have concerns about your diabetes care or have been referred by your primary care provider, consulting with an endocrinologist can help provide a specialized approach to diagnosing and managing your condition.
