At Norton Women’s Care, we treat a wide range of pelvic health issues, including bladder pain. Bladder pain, sometimes known as painful bladder syndrome or interstitial cystitis, is a condition of recurring discomfort in the bladder, urethra or pelvic region. Our experienced staff specializes in helping women address bladder pain and related issues to achieve a better quality of life.

Bladder Pain Symptoms

Bladder pain symptoms may include:

  • Urgent or frequent need to urinate
  • Pelvic pressure or pain
  • Increased pain as your bladder fills
  • Bladder pain that comes and goes

Bladder Pain Causes

The exact cause of bladder pain often is unknown. In some cases, it may be due to a problem with the inner lining of the bladder. Researchers believe some cases may be caused by the urine itself, or possibly due to a compromised immune system.

Diagnosis

Diagnosing bladder pain likely will include a detailed medical history, pelvic exam and urine tests. A cystoscopy (looking inside the bladder with a camera) may be required.

Bladder Pain Treatment

Because the cause of bladder pain often remains unknown, treatment options are designed to help women manage specific symptoms. Possible treatments include:

  • Dietary changes
  • Managing fluid intake
  • Bladder training
  • Physical therapy
  • Medication (such as pentosan polysulfate sodium)
  • Bladder instillation
  • Bladder distention
  • Surgical procedures
